About this course

AHCMOM213 — Operate and Maintain Chainsaws is the nationally recognised entry point for anyone using a chainsaw in a work context. We deliver it as a one-day practical course in the field, not a classroom briefing. You'll spend the day on the saw under the eye of an experienced trainer, building the habits that keep operators safe across the rest of their careers. The unit covers safe set-up, starting and stopping, on-the-job maintenance, cross-cutting, and managing the hazards that come with operating a high-revving cutting tool in a real environment. We assess by direct observation — no multiple-choice quizzes, no role-play — using timestamped video evidence captured on the day so your Statement of Attainment is defensible to any auditor who asks.

Who it's for

  • Rural fire crews, brigade members and volunteer firefighters
  • Council and parks staff doing trail clearing or storm response
  • Land management contractors and bushfire mitigation teams
  • Aboriginal ranger groups and IPA programs
  • Property owners managing fuel loads on rural land
  • Anyone who needs a recognised ticket to use a chainsaw at work

What you'll learn

  • Pre-start checks, refuelling and chain tension
  • Sharpening and basic field maintenance
  • Safe stance, grip and reactive force management (kickback, pull-in, pushback)
  • Starting techniques — on the ground and between the knees
  • Cross-cutting timber on the ground at different diameters
  • Reading and managing tension and compression in cut timber
  • PPE selection and correct fit (chaps, helmet, ear, eye, gloves, boots)
  • Safe shutdown, storage and post-use inspection
  • Recognising when a job is beyond a basic operator's scope

🎓 Outcomes

On successful completion you receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment in AHCMOM213 — Operate and maintain chainsaws. The SoA is issued by Field Ops Australia (RTO 45729) and listed on your USI transcript so you can produce it for any employer or auditor. Industry typically expects this competency to be refreshed every 3 years. We'll remind you 90 days before that date so you can re-book without lapsing.

📋 Assessment

Competency-based, observation-driven. The trainer captures timestamped video on the day, tagging each performance criterion as it's demonstrated. A short knowledge check at the start covers the theory (PPE, hazards, reactive forces, basic maintenance). The decision is Competent / Not Yet Competent — if you're not yet competent on the day, we tell you which criteria need more practice and offer a free re-assessment within 60 days.
